Emo Style

The emo scene has a certain style associated with it, that is much more subtle in some cases than punk or goth, and incorporates a much broader fashion base. Emo styles do vary, some like to dress it up all the time and plan outfits, whereas others are happy being more casual and going with the flow. Here are some tips on how you can create a great emo style.
emo style * Basically emos wear a lot of black, but unlike goths this is usually paired up with some bright and funky colours, for example if you were wearing dark jeans and a black shirt, you might wear a bright crimson red tie and white jacket, with matching or contrasting accessories. Band t-shirts are also popular, but make sure you buy a band you actually like and know a bit about, and not just some popular band like 'My Chemical Romance' just because you think they might be cool. For emos being clued up to music is a must, and you will look totally shallow and fake if you wear a band name that you don't know anything about. Hoodies are also a must, especially as jackets are not really in the emo fashion picture, so think about motifs such as skulls, stars and crosses. If you are very confident with your style you might also get away with some printed ironic catchphrases and logos, but you should stay away from anything that actually says 'emo' as you will look like a major wannabe. Layers are also a good emo look, such as a t-shirt over a long sleeve shirt, or a long sleeve stretch top under a vest top. Scarves are great for creating a layered look as well, and also brightening up dark outfits. You can get thin silk and linen scarves to wear in the summer, just loosely draped around the neck purely as an accessory. Those big long stripy winter scarves are very cool and you can also get cute matching mittens or even better fingerless gloves which are very much part of the emo look.

* Emos never wear sports logos such as Adidas or Nike - way too mainstream, but the odd article of designer clothing is acceptable, such as a really nice pair of tight jeans or a super stylish black shirt, as long as it doesn't have the label in a really obvious place. Jeans of course as mentioned should be tight for an emo look, and also well cut. The emo style usually stays well away from scruffy, so make sure all your trousers are the right length so they are not dragging on the ground and getting tatty, and also the right fit for your legs.

* Shoes should be flat, think funky pumps for girls and Converse or Vans trainers for girls and boys. Stay away from big chunky boots as this will look at little too punk, especially when teemed with skirts and tights for the girls. High heels are acceptable in some cases, especially if matched with an appropriate emo outfit, such as killer glossy red high heels matched with a black skirt and fitted sexy shirt, fishnet tights, and red accessories.

* Accessories are not vital, but they can help to jazz up a dark outfit. Layering accessories is a popular emo look, such as having lots of bangles on your wrists, or lots of necklaces. Cute tote bags and little backpacks are good too, but stay away from designer or leather handbags, as they look way to formal and showy for this emo style. Piercing and tattoos are also popular, but in moderation otherwise you are straying into punk/goth/metalhead territory.

* Makeup is a key part of the emo fashion. The emphasis is on the eyes, maybe because these are said to be the windows to the soul, and emos love to delve into the human psyche and express their emotions. Highlight the eyes with plenty of black eyeliner and smoky eye shadows. The odd bright colour is okay, but keep it simple and striking to avoid looking like a goth or eighties pop reject! Boys can wear a little eyeliner too, but they should keep it rough and ready and stay way from eye shadow, foundation or lip gloss to avoid looking too high maintenance. Nail polish should be dark and nails kept short, for boys and girls.

Emo Style Misconceptions

Emo Hairstyles presents Emo Style Misconceptions

As the emo culture becomes increasingly popular, it seems more and more people are developing stereotypes and misconceptions regarding emo style. Perhaps the most common mistake is that people associate anyone who chooses an emo look with a depressed state of mind. Emo is a means of personal expression, which involves getting in touch with one’s emotions. Some of these emotions may be negative, but that surely does not mean that choosing an emo style makes you depressed, self-destructive, or suicidal.

Emo Friends

Additionally, some people mistakenly identify emo style as “punk.” Although they share some common roots, punk style is somewhat different from emo. Punk seeks to defy societal norms in bold ways. In contrast, emo style seeks to show a person’s inner feelings through their outward appearance.

Sad Emo Boy

As such, it is frequently less drastic in terms of its non-conformity.Finally, many people seem to believe that adhering to one element of the emo style makes you entirely emo. Dying your hair black, for instance, is a personal choice and not always related to being emo. The same is true for wearing skinny jeans or canvas sneakers.

Sad Emo Girl

Each of these elements can act alone to suit any style. However, several elements must come together to be decidedly emo.

Long Emo Hairstyles for Emo Girls

Long Emo Hairstyles Emo Girls

Many girls who adopt the emo style tend to cut off much of their hair for a short, daring ‘do. However, short hair is definitely not a requirement for achieving a sexy emo look. In fact, there are numerous long emo hairstyles girls can wear.

These can fall anywhere from just below the shoulders to all the way down one’s back. However, all of one’s locks should not remain the same length. The best long emo styles feature long, choppy layers. They also look especially good when long bangs are added to the ‘do. These should fall in front of one eye, which is a characteristically emo trend.

As for the color, long styles leave lots of room to experiment with highlights, undertones, and chunks. The base color should be black, but almost any shade will look great as an addition. One popular trend is to color the bottom layers, which are the longest, a different shade from the rest of the style.

As for styling a long emo cut, all you need is a flat iron to create a sleek, straight look. This is the most common long emo look for girls. Other textures simply do not express the same style and should be avoided.

Emo Makeup Tips - Fall Winter 2008 - 2009

Emo Makeup Tips - Fall Winter 2008 - 2009

The best way to finish off your emo style is with some trendy emo makeup. Both guys and girls can wear makeup as part of their emo look. However, emo youths do not wear the same makeup fashions as many other people. Instead, they have their own way of using makeup to compliment their unique, expressive style. Since the eyes are often considered the most expressive part of the body, it is this feature that emo makeup seeks to emphasize most.

Therefore, both genders often use thick, dark eyeliner around both the upper and lower edge of their eyes. Sometimes, this dark shade is complimented with a second band of a bold, bright color. Many people also use their eyeliner to add “wings” sweeping out from the outer corner of each eye.

Mascara also helps draw attention to the eyes, and thick, dark lashes are part of the emo look. The prominence of the eyes is completed by adding a bright eye shadow. This is often offset by a smoky gray section of eye shadow along the top or side of the lids.

As for the rest of the face, emo youths do not generally seek to emphasize the cheeks with bronzer or blush. A paler colored flesh is preferred. However, the lips are often colored with a deep shade of lipstick or lip gloss.

Emo Makeup - How to Completing the Emo Look

Emo Makeup
Emo is usually associated with emotional rock music. To be emo, you have to understand what it really means. And maybe you already read all the how to's to became totally emo. You tested yourself and you found out that you enjoy sensitive, in some sense whiny music that is thoroughly emo. So you have an emo music taste, check. You have emo opinions, check. You perfected the emo hairstyle and emo wardrobe, check and check. Why not top it off with a totally emo face. While it may ostracize you from your non-emo friends, just think that you are doing this not because you just want to pose as an emo but because this is what you are. Here are some simple steps in doing emo makeup.

Emo style make up for boys and girls

You will need:
• Moisturizer
• Foundation
• Eye shadow
• Eye liner (liquid or pencil)
• Mascara
• Chap stick or light lipstick tones
• Loose powder (shade one tone lighter than your actual skin tone)

Here are the instructions on how to apply:

1. Note that you need to have this look for the entire day. For the make up to stick, apply moisturizer on your face and neck. Make sure you apply it thoroughly as we do not want to have a patchy looking face. Use moisturizers that have sun block in them so as to further boost the pale face.

2. Emo make up highly rests on the fact that you look pale. However, using foundation a tone lighter that your actual color will look unutterably silly especially in pictures so your best bet is to use same color foundation on your face but we will slightly lighten it with loose powder later. Apply the foundation on your face and blend it to your neck down. If your top slightly shows some part of the chest area, better use foundation to cover that area as well.

3. Some say that it is best to place the eye liner before the shadow but that somehow looks messy so it is advisable to dab on some shadow first. If you are a guy, you can skip this step entirely or stick to black or grey. If you are a girl, you can use other colors, from black, grey, pink, red, purple, green, whatever you fancy. Do not overdo it. Best to dab the eye shadow until the inner lid only.

4. Remove excess shadow on the base of the lids by brushing it with a blush on applicator or a Q-tip. If you are a beginner, use a soft black eye liner to line the upper lid and the lower, making sure you dab it from the inner part to the outer. Also, stick close to the lash line when doing this. If you are a bit more experienced in putting make upon, you can use the liquid liner.

5. Apply the loose powder to sort of seal the makeup together. Sort of like the glue for everything.

6. Apply two coats of black mascara, making sure not to clump the lashes together.

7. Finish off with an application of pale lipstick or if you are a guy, you can do with just lip balm.

Voila! You now have the dark, angst filled emo makeup. Make sure you bring some of these cosmetics in your bag as you may have to do touch ups at the middle of the day. Just a rule of thumb, never, ever over do it.
